The Italian Community is divided over the Columbus Statue removal.
There is a strange climate right now. My question here is: What is the boundary between reality and symbolism?
For who studies history may not be a mystery the discovery of America. More happened, and we can't forget the abuse over the Native people.
Was the Italian Community thinking of Columbus as the Devil when erected his statue?
The first Italian Immigrants that traveled to America were the poorest and most desperate.
Most of them were dark-skinned and experienced the abuse themselves. Being Columbus an Italian who dared, who discovered America, were important for the Italian immigrants at that time.
Ironically Columbus as slaver became a symbol of Italian pride.
What happens when we tear apart that symbol? Are we profaning and demonizing that same pride?
"Tear apart the Statue said the blind man, tear the statue apart". The blind man could not see that the statue was a portrayal of his father...
