We are in a time when we could wake up tomorrow and find out that the Police Force doesn't exist anymore.
So much hard work, blood, and sweat to protect generations over time. From our great-grandparents to now.
There was a man that started the long-standing Italian-American Police tradition. It was Joseph "Joe" Petrosino.
Joe immigrated to the States in 1873 from Padula(Italy, the Region of Campania).
He built his carrier starting from the bottom(newspapers boy, cleaning man, boot polisher).
Ironically while he was polishing shoes he was asked to enroll in the Police. It was the time when in New York the crimes were booming: extorsions, kidnapping, vandalism and homicides. What a beautiful picture, it seems not so much has changed...
At that time the word "Mafia" still didn't exist, but there was something called "Black Hand", an organized crime built by Italian-Americans.
Police needed a trusty person able to speak Italian and understand Italian culture. This person was Joe.
What Petrosino did was to infiltrate himself into the Criminal Sect. He put his life at risk to save lives.
I don't like speaking about the ending of a story. Eventually, Joe got killed in Italy, while on a "Secret Mission", which unfortunately the lovely "Media" turned into non so Secret.
Getting to the nitty-gritty, we are talking of a man fighting crime in 1903. But notice the similarity to nowadays Police.
Joe fought crimes in his community the same way as Police fight crimes in the Community right now as we speak, and they get killed every day for that reason, just for doing their job. They put their lives at risk.
We are in a time when we are running out of thanks.
How many times have you ever said "Thank you Dad", "Thank you Mom", "Thank you, Brother"?
Right now I say "Thank you Police", "Thank you for keeping my family safe"!
